Onyx Teamwear GYFL Tournament
15th September 2013
GYFL held their first tournament of the season at Carres Grammar School in Sleaford, the Onyx Team wear sponsored event was new to all the teams involved and the format seemed to give everyone a fair chance at winning something.
First round
Navenby for the second time in a weekend would play Barrowby in their opening match, which pretty much went the same way as the encounter the day before with Barrowby taking an early lead to a sleepy Navenby team. 2-0 after two minutes and the 15 minute game was effectively over. Navenby came back into the game but the task in hand was too great.
Navenby’s second game was straight after against a rested Great Ponton team, it looked like staying on and playing a second game was actually an advantage as Navenby quickly took a 2 – 0 lead. After a rocky start Great Ponton started to come into the game more and were awarded a free kick just outside the Navenby penalty area. A well worked short free kick split the Navenby defence and gave Great Ponton a deserved goal. Great Ponton pushed for an equaliser and Navenby started to look nervous, their pressure almost paid of with a lovely through pass leaving the Great Ponton striker 1 on 1 against Navenby’s goalie, the heavy rain seemed to save Navenby’s blushes as the shot was sliced. The match ended 3-1 to Navenby and they were but into the Europa Cup draw where they would play Colsterworth and Ancaster Centurions.
Europa Cup
Navenby’s first match was against Colsterworth who they are due to play in the league next weekend, so it gave both teams a chance to see what their opposition would be like. The game started tight and there were only a few chances, Navenby edging the possession. Navenby finally broke the deadlock with a wonderful counter attacking goal, Colsterworth were shaken and Navenby capitalised with another quick goal to lead the tie 2-0. Colsterworth managed to pull a goal back when a mix up between Navenby’s goal keeper and defence allowed their striker in. Final Score 3-1 to Navenby
Navenby’s final game of the tournament was against Ancaster Centurions who were looking for revenge for the two league games from last season. Ancaster knocked Navenby out of the shield last season and were hoping for a similar result. The match was very close and it looked like Ancaster would take the lead when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area for a hand ball. Luckily the Navenby defence were wide awake and blocked the ball on the line. With the game looking more and more like a 0-0 draw Navenby started to push for the winning goal which eventually came from a corner. Final Score 1-0 Navenby.
All the teams looked sharper this year and it looks like the GYFL will be a lot closer then previous seasons, Navenby’s U10’s look like they will be stronger this year once all their players are fully fit and relax into the season.
Well Done Navenby for your first winners medals of the season.
