Navenby Juniors v Great Ponton U10’s
8th December 2013
The Meerkats v The Snowmen
After last weeks narrow defeat at home to Aslockton, Navenby entertained Great Ponton in the last game before Christmas. Both teams agreed to bring some festive cheer to the occasion and wore a Christmas themed strip, the Navenby (Meerkats) played in a changed kit of red and black and Great Ponton (Snowmen) in a green and blue strip.
This did not take away from the importance of the game, after two defeats and a draw already this season Navenby could not afford another slip up if they want to challenge for the league in the second half of the season. Great Ponton were also looking for points to keep them on the tails of Ancaster Centurions and after a 12-1 win the day before they fancied there chances.
The Meerkats won the toss and chose to kick off allowing the Snowmen to take advantage of the wind.
First Half
Navenby started quickly and found themselves 2-0 up in the first 15 minutes whilst they might have a 2 goal lead going into the first break the score line did not reflect the match and the Great Ponton Snowmen were feeling hard done by. The second 15 minutes was a different story as the Snowmen froze out the Navenby midfield and pulled the score back to 2-2 with two well taken goals from Jack. Just before half time one of the Great Ponton players was bought down just outside the box unfortunately the well struck free kick hit the bar which was a big let off for the Meerkats as they went into the half time break 2-2.
Second Half
Great Ponton started the second half in fine form buoyed by their comeback and in the opening period they looked the most likely to score, it was left to the defensive partnership of Johnny and Harry to hold them at bay. Eventually Navenby got back into the game and Freddie started to cause them problems first down the wing then from all over the pitch as he used his pace to stretch a tired looking Ponton team.
Navenby ended the third quarter 4-2 in front with goals from Toby, Lucas and Kieran. As the teams came out for the final quarter Great Pontons hopes of getting back into the match melted away as Navenby scored their 5th goal and Kieran’s second. The victory was capped off with a 6th goal this time scored by Freddie himself.
The score line didn’t really reflect the game, Great Ponton were very much in this match from start to finish if it wasn’t for some great saves from Charlie ‘the Cat’ Smith in the first half the score line could have been very different.
It was a story of two halves and after comparing the Meerkats second half performance to that of the first half, they seemed to be on fire which seemed to melt the snowmen’s resolve.
Final score: Navenby Meerkats 6 – 2 Great Ponton Snowmen
